USW Weightlifter Wins Sports Scholarship
A University of South Wales (USW) student has become the first recipient of the University’s Vice-Chancellor’s Sports Scholarship.
Christie Williams, 23 from Godreaman, Aberdare, is studying for a degree in Strength& Conditioning at USW.
She is a member of the Weightlifting Wales Elite squad and competed at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014, and the 2015 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in India, where she picked up a bronze medal in the 58kg category. Most recently, she competed in the 2016 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in Malaysia.
She is currently training for this year’s Commonwealth Championships on the Gold Coast, and hopes to secure a medal in the Commonwealth Games, also in Australia, in 2018.
Christie said: “I am amazed to have won this award and to have been recognised by the University. Weightlifting has changed my life immeasurably; I will continue to work hard in my studies and progressing in the competitions.”
Tudor Williams, Director of Sport, said “‘Christie is an outstanding athlete who has already represented Wales in weightlifting. We are delighted to support Christie and hope that this support will help Christie to achieve both academic and sporting success over the next few years.”
The degree Christie is studying is a collaboration between USW and Setanta College, Ireland, and is designed and delivered by industry specialists to address the key competencies required for those working in strength and conditioning. Students are predominantly based at the USW Sport Park in Treforest.
The £500 award is presented to students who have achieved excellence in their sport when it is not within the normal British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Championships.
