Freshers and returning students who love sport are in for a treat next Thursday, (September 22) as ATRiuM, Cardiff campus welcomes guests from a range of sporting backgrounds. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Speakers including BBC Wales’ football correspondent, Rob Phillips; award winning journalist, author and rugby fan Carolyn Hitt and performance psychologist for Wales and Swansea City, Dr Ian Mitchell will be taking part in a conference to launch the new BA Sports Journalism degree. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

The event will also be attended by a range of industry experts and practitioners as well as a number of University of South Wales graduates who are now working in the sports sector. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

BA Sports Journalism course leader Julie Kissick started her sports journalism career at ITV, where she was the first woman to produce Soccer Sunday and Top Sport. She went on to work for the BBC, covering the 1999 Rugby World Cup as well as other major sporting events and stories. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Julie added: “This is an exciting new chapter for our journalism offering here at USW and its fantastic to be able to launch the degree in front of a host of people who know and understand the industry. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

“I love working in sport because passion is a prerequisite, there really isn’t room for mediocrity because it means so much to so many and I’m sure we’ll recruit students who want to develop and share that passion in an academic environment. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

“As a young female journalist in the 1990s it was really difficult to be taken seriously when I said I wanted to work in sport and there is still a long way to go before we really see the dismantling of the glass ceiling. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

“I’m confident though that this course will offer a wide range of opportunities for aspiring women reporters and I’ll be doing all I can to get that message out there.” ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

If you are interested in being part of the audience for the conference or finding out more about the course, you can email Julie.kissick@southwales.ac.uk ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

There will also be a panel discussion about employability and what it takes to make a successful career as a sports journalist and delegates will be invited to ask the speakers questions and take part in the discussions. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

The conference is at 2pm – 5pm in the cinema on Thursday 22nd September 2016. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌
