Influencing The Provision Of Domiciliary Care In Swansea
Residents could have the chance to influence how domiciliary care for older people will be provided in the future.
If the Council’s Cabinet agrees next week people will be invited to have their say on proposals to redesign the services to further enable people to live as independently as they can in their own homes.
Cllr Jane Harris, Swansea Council Cabinet member for Services for Adults and Vulnerable People said: “We want to continue giving our citizens the best possible quality of life and we know most people are happiest living in the familiar surroundings of their own home.
“The future brings opportunities such as better technologies but also challenges such as increased demand for care, greater numbers of older people with more complex care needs and rising costs.
“To ensure that older people receive quality care that helps them live as independently as possible at home, we think domiciliary care services need to adapt.”
She added: “We have listened to residents including those who use our existing services and their relatives/carers, care workers and others, about what they think works well now and will work well in future.
“Their views have allowed us to suggest a future system which aims to deliver the right support at the right time and in the right place.
“It also needs to protect care workers jobs in the local authority and external sector improving skills, working conditions, and standards to make sure we get the best outcomes for clients.
“It important that we now get people’s thoughts on what we are proposing.”
The proposals include:
· Re-design an existing short-term service which helps people to do things for themselves by learning or re-learning the skills necessary for daily living, for example after a stay in hospital. This is known as a reablement service.
· Explore the potential to re-design the existing long term services to include a rapid response service and a specialist dementia service.
· Re-design the way contracts are drawn up to ensure that the same service can be delivered no matter where you live in Swansea and less travelling time for care workers, giving them more time to care.
Domiciliary Care also known as Home Care is provided to people who live in their own homes but who require additional support that allows them to maintain their independence and quality of life. Anyone at any stage of life could require domiciliary care.
The services are provided by the Council, sometimes jointly with the NHS and sometimes by other organisations which have a contract with the local authority.
