Business Centre Users To Enjoy Cream Of Merthyr Tydfil Amateur Art
Workers and conference delegates at Merthyr Tydfil’s Orbit Business Centre are set to enjoy a cultural backdrop, thanks to a new permanent exhibition showcasing the talents of local artists.
More than 100 paintings depicting scenes of Merthyr Tydfil old and new, landscapes, portraits, still lifes and abstract art are currently adorning the walls of the ground floor break-out room at the Rhydycar Business Park premises.
The exhibition was the idea of local residents Alan Dee and Joe McMenamin, who wanted to bring together and display the work of some of town’s many amateur art groups.
Those taking part include the Dowlais Visual Arts Group, Friday Art Group, the town centre-based Gates Art Group, Cefn Community Centre Art Group and Aberfan Art Society.
“Art classes allow members to mix with like-minded people and make new friends,” said Alan Dee. “Some use painting as a kind of therapy and others find it helps them express themselves. This is the first opportunity for most of them to show other people their work.”
The Orbit Centre was suggested as a venue by the Welsh Government Effect (Enterprise facilitation for effective community transformation) Merthyr Tydfil Project, managed by Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council.
Orbit Centre Manager, Lance Whiteley, said: “Allowing local artists to exhibit here means that those who want to sell will have the opportunity to do so to some of the people who work and attend conferences here.”
An official opening of the exhibition will be held on Wednesday, August 31, from 11am-1pm, followed by light refreshments. Members of the public are welcome to attend both the opening and the ongoing exhibition.
