Tenants Thrilled With New Housing Improvement Work
Council tenants have welcomed improvement work which has recently been completed to their properties.
Homes in the Penycae area have recently received new kitchens and bathrooms. The work is part of Wrexham Council’s project to ensure they achieve the Welsh Housing Quality Standard by 2020.
The work was carried out by Wrexham Council contractor, CLC.
Council tenant, Mr B Roberts, said, “I’m thrilled with the work now that it’s been completed. I was able to choose which colours I wanted so I could make sure my other kitchen appliances matched it and I’m very pleased with the results. I knew there would be some disruption especially during the first few days when the contractors were ripping out the old kitchen but the Council and contractor staff were very supportive throughout. Now that it’s finished, it looks great and I’m very glad I agreed to have it done. ”
Another tenant in the Penycae area, also had a kitchen and bathroom replaced. Mr I Williams said, “I’m very happy with how the work has turned out. It’s a complete transformation from how it looked before. It’s modern and clean and good quality and it makes such a difference to the house. I have a disability condition with my eyes so it was really helpful to be able to choose a colour scheme for the kitchen which makes it easier to see my way around. I’ve also had roofing work carried out so I’m very pleased.”
Local member for Penycae, Cllr John Phillips, said, “I’m delighted that tenants here have been able to benefit from the Council’s extensive improvements programme. It’s important that these properties are modernized and made fit for the future. The new kitchens and bathrooms look to be excellent quality and it’s great to see that the tenants are so pleased with the work and the quality of the product.”
Local member for Penycae and Ruabon South, Cllr Joan Lowe, said, “It’s been wonderful to see the difference these improvements have made to these properties and to see how happy the tenants are with the work. Having a new kitchen and bathroom installed in your home can be a difficult process to go through but I’m glad to see that the Council and CLC have provided support throughout and the tenants have coped very well. I think they have all been impressed with the quality of the final product and this has made it all worthwhile.”
Wrexham Council’s housing improvement programme received a boost earlier this month when the Council’s Executive Board approved a record £56.4m investment to continue the work in 2017/18. This includes a £7.6m Major Repairs Allowance grant which the Welsh Government awards to local authorities to support them achieving the Welsh Housing Quality Standard.
The Council anticipates that the work completed over the next 12 months will include:
• 2,000 properties to receive new kitchens
• 2,400 properties to receive new bathrooms
• 450 properties to receive new central heating systems
• 700 properties to receive electrical rewires
• 950 properties will be reroofed
• 280 properties will receive External Wall Insulation
Lead Member for Housing, Cllr Ian Roberts, said, “We are in the middle of the biggest housing improvements programme seen in the County Borough for many decades. It’s a busy time for our contractors and for our tenants but we have now started to see the benefits in communities across Wrexham. Thousands of properties have now already received internal and external improvements and we are well on track to meet the Welsh Housing Quality Standard. The approved investment for 2017/18 is another huge step in helping us achieve this so these are very positive times for our tenants.”
