Dolgellau College Students Take Part in Litter
Initiative
Coleg Meirion Dwyfor’s Dolgellau campus students and staff recently teamed up with local Gwynedd Councillor Linda Morgan and Gwynedd Council’s Tidy Towns scheme for a litter-pick centred on the Marian area of the town. The students undertook this as part of a ‘community challenge’ during the college’s half-term holiday and was a part of their Welsh Baccalaureate course.
The student volunteers braved torrential rain during the morning’s session and ended up collecting over 25 bags of rubbish, including three rusty old bicycle frames. The students were also able to recycle much of the rubbish making the exercise even more enviromentally friendly and worthwhile.
Councillor Morgan, said: ‘Working with the students to clear rubbish on the Marian was an uplifting experience. It was so good to witness their positivity and enthusiasm to help keep the Marian clean and tidy. I’m hoping that their example will be an inspiration to other young people to take part and help care for their local environment, especially here in Dolgellau.’
One of the students taking part was Eve Hughes, who added: ‘I enjoyed taking part in the challenge and was thrilled to have been part of a good cause. Helping the community will have encouraged a lot of people including myself. The Mawddach Trail is an important feature from Dolgellau down to Barmouth, and keeping the area clean will make a huge difference.’
Gwynedd Council’s Cabinet Member for the Environment, Councillor John Wynn Jones, added: ‘It’s hopeful to see our young people taking pride in their environment. Dolgellau and the Mawddach Valley to Cadair Idris is such a picturesque location that any amount of rubbish will seriously detract from its natural beauty. I congratulate the students on their very worthy effort.’
Those who discard litter in a public place are committing a crime. Anyone found guilty of littering in any public place could face a fine of up to £2,500. To report any instances of fly-tipping, contact Gwynedd Council Street enforcement team on 01766 771000.
Gwynedd’s Tidy Towns scheme is funded by a Welsh Government grant which aims to improve the local environment.
