The Llanfair PG Rainbows have held a waste free picnic to learn about waste minimisation, recycling and re-use as one of their activities to gain a ‘Roundabout the World’ badge ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

The Llanfair PG Rainbows have held a waste free picnic to learn about waste minimisation, recycling and re-use as one of their activities to gain a ‘Roundabout the World’ badge. Nine Rainbows, aged 5 to 7, enjoyed a waste free picnic this evening that was packaging free and learnt about recycling from the Council’s Waste Management Section. The Rainbows have one more activity to complete before they are awarded their ‘Roundabout the World badge’ that will be worn proudly on their Rainbow T-shirts. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

Each year Rainbow units work towards gaining badges through taking part in a range of activities as a group. The girls in each unit select the activities and badges they would like to have and this term the Llanfair PG Rainbows have chosen the ‘Roundabout the World’ badge. Each badge has four group activities divided into look, learn, laugh and love. “There are ten activities to choose from and the unit completes one activity from each section. The learn activity the girls have chosen is ‘Save the Planet’ that looks at reducing, reusing, and recycling, so we invited the Council’s Waste Management Section to come and talk to the Rainbows about recycling on the Island and they have helped us to organise a waste free picnic that we can all enjoy,” said Liz Foskett, Daisy Rainbow Leader. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

After learning about how to reduce the amount of packaging by using lunch boxes, refilling drinks bottles and buying loose pieces of fruit, the Rainbows sat down this evening to enjoy a waste free picnic. “It’s brilliant that the Llanfair PG Rainbows have chosen the ‘Save the Planet’ activity and are enjoying a waste free picnic. There is a lot of food packaging that is not recyclable and can be avoided or minimised. For example, buying family sized packets of snacks and storing them in a re-sealable container is better than individually packaged items. We were delighted to come and talk to the Rainbows and hope they enjoy their picnic and receiving their badge later this year,” said Elin Owen, Principal Waste Management Officer. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌

The Rainbows need to complete one more activity before they can proudly sew on their ‘Roundabout the World’ badge. “We will be working on a laugh activity up until Easter, that involves being creative in the kitchen with jelly, before each Rainbow gets their badge. They have enjoyed learning about reuse and recycling and I believe this waste free picnic gives them a practical experience of reducing and re-using. In addition to laying the foundations for future skills, giving girls their own space and having fun, guiding is also about giving girls a voice and I hope that they will talk to their families about recycling,” concludes Liz. ‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌
